A major energy recovery facility required a more efficient way to manage contractor access and site safety during a planned maintenance outage. With a large contractor workforce operating around the clock, the client needed a solution that would provide robust access control, improve site visibility and support safe project delivery without creating unnecessary complexity.
Breathe Safety installed, commissioned and operated the Entry Sentry digital access control system throughout the outage. The system was designed to provide real-time oversight of contractor movements, helping the client maintain control of site access while improving accountability across multiple work areas.
During the outage, approximately 170 contractors were working on site. Using a combination of digital access cards, full-height security turnstiles, CCTV and two-way communication systems, Entry Sentry enabled contractor access to be managed continuously across key site locations. This provided both the client and project teams with greater visibility of personnel movements while helping maintain strong security and safety standards throughout the event.
One challenge often associated with temporary outage infrastructure is installation complexity. To minimise disruption, the system utilised wireless communication technology that reduced setup time and removed the need for extensive cabling across pedestrian routes. This streamlined deployment while reducing potential trip hazards and installation costs.
As the project progressed, Breathe Safety's on-site controllers identified an opportunity to provide additional support beyond the original scope of work. Working closely with the client, the team assisted with the setup and management of gas detection monitoring across critical work areas, helping to strengthen site safety arrangements and provide additional operational reassurance during the outage.
The result was a solution that combined contractor management, communication and monitoring into a single, coordinated system. By providing both technology and experienced personnel, Breathe Safety helped the client maintain efficient operations while enhancing oversight during a critical maintenance period.
Outcomes

- Continuous 24/7 access control and personnel oversight throughout the outage.
- Security turnstiles, CCTV and two-way communication integrated into a single solution.
- Efficient management of a large contractor workforce during maintenance activities.
- Faster installation achieved through wireless communication technology.
- Reduced need for temporary cabling and associated site disruption.
- Additional gas detection support provided during the project.
- Improved visibility, accountability and operational control across the site.
The Breathe Difference
Technology on its own doesn't improve safety. It's how that technology is applied that creates value.
For this project, Breathe Safety combined digital access control, real-time visibility and practical on-site support to create a solution that balanced safety, efficiency and ease of deployment. By simplifying contractor management, reducing installation complexity and identifying opportunities to add value beyond the original scope, we helped the client improve oversight without creating additional operational burden.
The result was a smarter, more connected approach to outage management that enhanced control, supported productivity and delivered benefits across the wider project.
