Industry: Energy from Waste
Location: Eastern England
Duration: Ongoing since 2025
A major energy generation facility required a comprehensive safety solution to support its annual maintenance outage. With hundreds of contractors working around the clock and multiple confined space activities taking place simultaneously, the client needed a system that would improve oversight, streamline permit management and maintain high safety standards throughout the project.
Breathe Safety delivered a fully integrated confined space safety package, supporting approximately 20 confined space entries through a combination of physical controls, rescue provision and digital monitoring technology. The solution was designed to give operational teams greater visibility of ongoing activities while improving the efficiency of permit and entry management processes.
To support complex outage operations, dedicated infrastructure was installed in the weeks leading up to the shutdown period, ensuring the system was fully operational from the first day of maintenance activities. This proactive approach minimised disruption and allowed the client to maximise productive working time during a critical operational window.
Alongside digital entry monitoring, Breathe Safety supplied a dedicated rescue team and additional standby personnel to provide coverage for confined space activities outside the scope of the monitoring system. This ensured comprehensive protection across the site, regardless of entry type or location.
The project also provided an opportunity to introduce new entry management methods, including enhanced entry point identification systems designed to improve visibility and simplify coordination with other contractors working on-site. These improvements supported safer operations while helping the client manage multiple work fronts efficiently.
Following completion of the outage, elements of the installed infrastructure were retained on site to support future shutdowns. By reducing the amount of installation work required during subsequent outages, the client will benefit from shortened mobilisation times and lower implementation costs in future years.
Outcomes
- Integrated confined space monitoring, rescue provision and safety management delivered through a single provider.
- Support provided for multiple simultaneous confined space entries during a major maintenance outage.
- Dedicated rescue team and standby personnel available throughout the project.
- Infrastructure installed and commissioned ahead of the outage, enabling immediate operational readiness.
- Faster and more efficient permit and entry management processes.
- Positive feedback received regarding safety standards and operational controls.
- Improved visibility and management of confined space entry locations.
- Retained infrastructure designed to reduce future mobilisation costs and installation time.
The Breathe Difference
Large outages create pressure to balance safety, productivity and cost. We believe the best solutions improve all three.
For this project, Breathe Safety combined digital monitoring, rescue provision and practical site support into a single integrated service. By planning ahead, improving visibility and streamlining entry management, we helped the client maintain robust safety standards while reducing disruption and improving operational efficiency.
The result was a safer, more coordinated outage with benefits that will continue to deliver value long after the shutdown was complete.
