Major industrial maintenance projects involving welding and arc air gouging present significant respiratory protection challenges, particularly when work is carried out in confined spaces or where hazardous fumes and gases are present. Following updated HSE guidance and subsequent enforcement activity, many traditional respiratory protection methods are no longer suitable for certain applications.
Breathe Safety worked with a leading industrial services contractor and operators at major petrochemical facilities to provide a compliant solution for long-duration welding and arc air gouging activities. The solution combined a BAC-D breathing air compressor system, continuous air quality monitoring, breathing air distribution equipment and specialist respiratory protective equipment to support safe working in demanding environments.
One of the primary applications involved welding within confined spaces where asphyxiant shielding gases were used. These conditions require a reliable supply of breathing-quality air for extended periods while maintaining compliance with current safety guidance. The same approach was also implemented for prolonged arc air gouging activities, where workers can be exposed to high levels of airborne contaminants over extended durations.
A key advantage of the system is its suitability for long-duration work. Unlike cylinder-based breathing air systems, which require frequent bottle changes, the compressor-based solution provides a continuous supply of breathing air, helping to minimise disruption and improve productivity during critical maintenance operations.
To further support operational reliability, Breathe Safety provided dedicated breathing apparatus technicians to operate and monitor the equipment. These personnel also fulfilled standby and fire watch duties, giving clients additional reassurance that the system would be managed correctly throughout the work activity.
